New Portrait Of Glyn Powell
April 20, 2023
I had the pleasure of painting the eminent Glyn Powell recently. I was commissioned by the Old Boys Association, former pupils of the Brecon Grammar School.
In 2022 Glyn was awarded the Blue Robe at the National Eisteddfod of Wales and welcomed to the Gorsedd of the Bards, taking the bardic name Glyn ap Cilieni, in remembrance of his families roots in the Epynt and the “clearance” of that community by the MOD in 1940. With the Blue robe the Gorsedd wished to recognise his contribution and life time service to his community and nation.
The painting was unveiled by the Mayor, Councillor David Meredith, at Brecon High School last week with over 100 people in attendance.
It was a great occasion which celebrated Glyn’s many achievements including his period serving in the army as an Officer in Korea and Malaysia. His academic profession as an historian and teacher, including Principle of Brecon high school. His tireless campaign to save the Senni valley from flooding which lasted 9 years, and his contribution to the Welsh Farmers Union which saw him elected as Vice President. A first language Welsh speaker, Glyn Powell continues to inspire.
